E-mail interview with Heinali & Matt Finney!

Shortly after being contacted by Matt Finney and making the blog post about their great project, we set up an e-mail interview! They're some pretty interesting fellows, enjoy the read!

Ayrtin: Let's start off with something light and easy, how are you guys
doing? Life treating you well?

Heinali: Well I'm still alive. Though I'm not so sure lately whether
this is well or not.

Matt: About the same. But thank you for asking. Hope you're well.

Ayrtin: How did you two meet or come into contact? I thought it was pretty
strange and interesting that you both teamed up, what with
Heinali being Ukrainian and Matt from Alabama. Are you good friends
and what got this project started?

We're brothers but here's the untold story about how we met:
We were both drifters in Seattle some years ago. We met at a homeless
shelter. Heinali said, "I can't really play guitar but I know these
two really cool chords." and Matt said, "I can't really sing but I can
do this moody spoken word thing." We started a band as a way to get
some mexican black tar heroin. We've been doing this since.

Ayrtin: Do you have any plans set for a next album? What are they?

We actually already finished our next album, it's recorded and
mastered and going to be released this spring on Paradigms Recordings,
right after the re-release of Conjoined. The new one is called Ain't
no Night.

Ayrtin: Have you two ever played with the idea of touring and the steps it
would take to do so?

Yes but it's absolutely not possible right now, due to financial difficulties.

Ayrtin: Is there any specific direction or sound that is being aimed for
when composing the music and writing the lyrical content? If there is,
why did you decide to "limit" the project to that vision?

Heinali: Yes and no. It's really difficult to explain, a very abstract
thing. There are, of course, influences, which could inspire the
sound, so some kind of specific direction could be formed and noted.
There are also our previous releases which could dictate a movement in
genre and overall aesthetics. But I don't think I could say I
intentionally limit our work. All this vision and limitation is quite
natural, it just feels right to do it this way, not the other. It's
never a premeditated restriction.

Ayrtin: How and when do you decide that a piece is finished, be it the
lyrics or music?

Heinali: Like the every other musician or composer I assume, it just
feels finished. Apart from this I'm not a fan of over-production, to
me it's always better to leave it a bit raw than to bring in an
unnecessary element.

Ayrtin: Individually, what started both of you into the world of creating
or being involved in music?
Aside from listening to it, of course!

Heinali: I don't know what exactly started me into the world of music,
it was absolutely spontaneous and became something big only with time.
I could tell for sure that now music is the only way to communicate
for me.

Matt: I never could learn to play an instrument. My mind could never
wrap around it for whatever reason. I was always limited to
listener/fanatic. Music is the only thing I can talk about endlessly.
I never got involved with anything serious until I met Randy Yerkes in
high school. He really liked my poetry and asked me to do some vocal
samples for his solo Moosejaw album and Finneyerkes morphed out of
that. I met Heinali a few years after that I haven't looked back.
Working with him as changed the way I think about music and in turn
made me love music more. I can't thank him enough for that.

Ayrtin: Very personal, so only if you're willing to share: Do either of you
have a specific personal experience
that drives you (and what is it) more than others and do you feel it
affects the direction of your creations?

Heinali: Of course. But it doesn't really matter what kind of
traumatizing personal experience made you the one you are. What really
matters is being fucked up and lonely actually could teach you how to
watch and listen and feel. Maybe it does it the hard way but it does.

Ayrtin: Matt; Why did you choose spoken word to accompany the music? Was
this a decision that both of you were involved in?

Matt: I can't sing, that's the biggest reason. I wish I could but I'm tone
deaf. I think it works out for the best though. It makes people really
have to listen to what we're saying. A lot of people ignore vocalists
and the lyrics but we put that at the forefront. And Heinali already
knew about my handicap. We make it work.

Ayrtin: Heinali; You have done a lot of work since 2003. Do you think
you've come a long way since then?

Heinali: Since then yes, a huge way. I never though I would be doing
what I'm doing now back in 2003.

Ayrtin: I'd love to hear about the other projects either of you are
involved in. What purpose do they serve? Do you
ever find it stressful to be involved in multiple projects?

Heinali: Well the project with Matt is my only project apart from my
solo works. So it's not stressful at all.

Matt: The only other musical project I've been involved with was
Finneyerkes. It was a lot more ambient, a lot more subtle, and the
lyrics weren't so personal. They were kinda large scale. It was very
important in my developing my style of vocals and how I write songs.
But that's finished.The band with Heinali is the only thing I have
going and it's my
heart.

Ayrtin: Do either of you have any religious beliefs? What are they?

No, we don't.

Ayrtin: What other artists are your biggest inspirations? I know that your
recent work "Conjoined" was dedicated to Kris Angylus of
The Angelic Process, is there any other musicians or artists you feel
the same about?

Heinali: There are just too many. But if I'll limit the list to the
specific artist which inspired the Heinali and Matt Finney sound that
would be My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Joy Division, The Cure,
Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Nadja, The Angelic
Process, Moonspell, Merzbow, Nirvana.

Matt: WAY too many but Heinali covered most of them.

Ayrtin: I think that'll be enough for now! Is there anything either of you
would like to add?

I was personally contacted by Matt Finney and asked to feature this project, I must say I am glad he did. I was provided their Conjoined EP (which I was requested not to provide, sorry guys!) that is dedicated to Kris Angylus (R.I.P) of The Angelic Process. Why is this important? Well the EP is very similar to The Angelic Process' material, although it's very enjoyable in it's own right. With Heinali's vast, swallowing compositions accompanied by Finney's almost nihilistic spoken word delivery, this is some great material worth investing in. Visit their Bandcamp to support them!
